Have you seen a decrease in job applications? Or a drop in the quality of candidates? Increasingly,...
Hiring Tip - Job Candidate Pools
When it’s time to hire, do you have a go-to pool of candidates?
Not many employers do. Often, hiring managers start their search from scratch. They are wading into a job market that is a mix of job seekers--some who are familiar with their organization, and others who are not.
That’s fine. Employers can still succeed in hiring as long as they have a compelling job ad, posted on the right job boards, and a hiring team that quickly responds to qualified applicants.
Save Time and Money
However, employers--and hiring managers--can save a significant amount of money and time with a candidate pool. With this pool in place, employers can reduce or eliminate the expense of promoting a job opening by contacting job seekers who have already expressed an interest in working for their organizations.
Building a Candidate Pool
To build a candidate pool, consider:
- Add all qualified applicants to a contact list for future consideration--a basic first step
- Add an “employment interest form” on the company website
- Create “hiring soon” posts on social channels and link to the “employment interest form”
- Tag qualified applicants for future consideration in an ATS
- Take detailed applicant notes--sometimes an applicant’s great qualities are lost from memory
- Connect with potential applicants via LinkedIn to see how and where their careers progress
- Check in with past applicants for new skills and qualifications at least once a year
The above tactics are effective in building a candidate pool, but it’s not always easy for employers to execute on them. That’s why many are adding technology, or even outsourcing some of these tasks, in an effort to streamline future hiring initiatives.
