Hiring Tip - Know Your Competition

Written by Randi Renee Doerr | Aug 16, 2024 7:34:55 PM

Do you know your competition in the job market? This is one of the questions our team asks when first meeting with our Full Service Hiring clients. And “not really” is a common response.

In a tough job market, you need to gain any edge you can find. One of the quickest and most effective ways to find that edge is to know your competition.

Know Your Competition

In order to beat out your competition, you first must identify who they are.

It’s easy to go straight to your industry competitor; however, you'll also want to consider other industries that are hiring for the same type of talent. You can never be certain of who is winning candidates away from you, but here are two tips to zero in on the competition:

  • Review local employer ratings found on sites like Comparably, or check a “Best Places to Work” list published for your region.
  • Ask past applicants who opted out by sending a follow up survey--this can have the added bonus of uncovering why some decided to ghost you.

Once you identify the employers who are luring away your candidates, you need to do something about it.

Differentiate from the Competition

To win candidates away from your competition, you need to differentiate your organization from the competition...in a good way. This requires that you research your competitors, then:

  • Copy what they do well. This doesn’t sound like differentiating, but it’s effective at helping your organization level up with your competitors--and it eliminates some of their differentiators
  • Amplify aspects of your employer brand that are unique to your organization and missing from your competitors recruitment marketing.
