Hiring Tip - Set Candidate Expectations

Written by Randi Renee Doerr | Aug 19, 2024 6:48:36 PM

How well do you set expectations with job candidates? You may not know the answer if you haven’t surveyed your past candidates.

But you need to know the answer if you want to increase your chances of hiring the best.

Many employers fail to provide any expectations in regard to the hiring process. Applicants are left to guess at next steps, timelines, and with whom they will be interviewing. This commonly happens when:

  • There is not a documented, repeatable hiring process in place.
  • The hiring manager does not have enough time to focus on the hiring process.

If you face one or both of these situations, you may be falling short when it comes to setting expectations with your job candidates. Because you can’t tell them what’s next if you don’t know that yourself!

A Repeatable Process

To keep the interest of qualified candidates, you need to make promises and deliver on them. In this way,  you can build trust over a short time. This is best achieved with a documented, repeatable hiring process for your organization that is easy to implement consistently.

A repeatable hiring process can allow for small adjustments as needed, but there should never be any uncertainty as to what needs to happen and when. Uncertainty will cause delays and broken promises.

Time to Focus

The issue of an overworked hiring manager is nothing new. Especially for small businesses, there is often no other alternative than to ask an existing employee to manage the hiring process. This situation inevitably leads to substandard performance in either hiring or in their primary focus area.

If you have this situation, mitigate the impact on hiring by removing items from the hiring manager’s primary focus area, or extend deadlines on those items. Alternatively, look to bring in additional internal or external resources to help move the hiring process forward.
