Hiring Tip - Write Job Ads that Work

Written by Randi Renee Doerr | Aug 19, 2024 7:01:02 PM

Are your job ads good enough? Maybe yours are fine, but you’d be surprised at how many hiring managers would struggle to even answer that question.

It’s not uncommon for job ads (the information that appears on both your careers site and third party job sites) to look very similar to an employer’s internal, legal job description. And even when the job ad is written a bit differently, they often amount to just a generic ad template applied to every role across the company.

In a competitive job market, that simply won’t cut it.

A Remarkable Job Ad

To attract more qualified candidates, you have to go where they are and make a great first impression. This is done by posting remarkable job ads on the right job boards.

Here are three components of a remarkable job ad:

  • A job title that is understood and appears in search: Avoid over complex, jargony, or internal-only job titles. Promote open positions that are easily understood and commonly searched for by job seekers. And always abide by each job board’s requirements or rules on job titles. This will help maximize your ad’s visibility and click-throughs.
  • Straight to the point with realistic requirements - Don’t bore the job seeker with nonessential information in the first paragraph of a job ad. Right off the bat, tell them the exact job qualifications and duties. But also be realistic with those qualifications or requirements. Consider whether you really need x amount of years of experience, or proficiency in a particular area. Some requirements are better listed as preferences.
  • Promote benefits and differentiators: Once a job seeker clicks on your ad and believes they are qualified, you now must make the case for why they should consider working at your company. This is where it’s important to show how your company is different from other employers hiring for the same position. Opportunities for professional development and career advancement are two benefits often omitted in ads, but that are very important to job seekers today.
